Children's Cultural Residency: Cohort 1 Showcase in Owo

On Saturday, 29 August, the children of Cohort 1 walked a red carpet into the event hall at Imade College, Owo, and gave the work of four weeks to an audience for the first time.

The venue was not incidental. Imade College is the school Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin once led, and its grounds carry the busts to prove it. A residency about heritage, held on that ground, was teaching something before anyone said a word.

The hall filled early. Parents came, and elders, and the community leaders whose presence at a children's performance tells you how seriously it was being taken. The red carpet opened at 11:00 and was busy well before the programme began.

Then the children ran it. The compères were children. The welcome was given by a boy in a suit standing in front of a banner nearly as tall as he was. Adults spoke, and spoke well, but the afternoon belonged to the cohort.

The dance came first: the company in blue adire, horsetail whisks at full height, barefoot on a concrete floor, performing steps most of them had not known a month earlier. The music was live and it was theirs: a bench of children on congas and agogo keeping time for the dancers.

Then the drama. Scenes built around the three ideas the residency was designed to teach: heritage, peace, and citizenship. Not lectures in costume, but arguments played out. A scene at a table, a group kneeling in stillness after all that movement, a two-hander carried by two young performers with a full hall watching.

At the end the whole cohort stood together across the stage. That is the photograph worth keeping. Four weeks earlier, most of them had never performed for an audience at all.

A residency like this does not exist to produce one good afternoon. It exists to give children tools, in culture and in character, that outlast the residency itself. Cohort 1 has them now.
